New Delhi: The Indian Council of Social Science Research ( ICSSR) will significantly increase funding for social science research in India, ToI reported on November 15. The organisation plans to spend Rs 235 crore this year, not including research projects for undergraduate and postgraduate students, said the report (by Manash Pratim Gohain).
The ICSSR will focus on several areas, including studies on vulnerable indigenous groups, research led by women, and projects by college and university students.
One key area of focus is research on Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). “Research will prioritize understanding cultural practices, sustainable living techniques, & climate adaptation strategies of these communities, which hold insights relevant to modern challenges of equity, social harmony, & environmental sustainability,” said ICSSR member secretary Prof Dhananjay Singh.
The ICSSR will also fund research projects for undergraduate and postgraduate students starting in February 2025. Up to 500 students will receive funding to conduct independent research in areas such as development, health, agriculture, technology, and culture.
To increase women’s participation in research, the ICSSR will fund 150-200 projects led by women. The council will also continue its longitudinal studies program, with a focus on issues like disaster management, climate change, agricultural technology, and social health.
The ICSSR plans to announce the selected projects by January of next year.
