Popular Punjabi rapper Badshah has belted out hit tracks like Kar Gayi Chull from Kapoor and Sons, Garmi from Street Dancer 3D, Naina from Crew, and Proper Patola from Namaste England. While he is an established musician in the industry, did you know that he is a National Olympiad gold medalist in Mathematics and holds a degree in engineering? Reportedly, the singer did not have a great time convincing his parents about his career choice.
In an old interview, Badshah had once revealed that he was “ultimate” at Mathematics. He confessed that he was a National Olympiad gold medalist in the subject. In the same interview, he revealed that his CAT score was 98.25 per cent in DI (Data Interpretation) without any preparation. He further expressed his love for the subject and “problem solving”.
Before diving into music, Badshah studied civil engineering and even worked as a civil engineer. Reflecting on that phase, he mentioned attending St. Stephen's College briefly before transferring to an engineering college. After graduating, he worked on construction sites, complete with a safety helmet, but realized it wasn't his passion. Eventually, music became his focus, and he never looked back.
Previously in an interview with the Hindustan Times, Badshah shared how challenging it was to convince his parents about his dream of becoming a rapper. When he first brought up the idea, his parents were unfamiliar with rap music. To explain, he showed them a 50 Cent music video, which backfired due to its provocative content. This led his parents to suggest he focus on growing up and pursuing a stable career first. At the time, with limited exposure to Indian rap beyond artists like Baba Sehgal, convincing them was an uphill task.
Badshah’s educational journey
Badshah completed his schooling at Bal Bharati Public School, Pitampura, Delhi. Later, he attended one of the prestigious educational institutions in Delhi, St. Stephen’s. Badshah fondly recalls one prized possession from his brief time at St Stephen’s College—his identity card. Though he attended the college for just a month before transferring to pursue engineering in Chandigarh, the ID card held a special significance for him. Getting into St Stephen’s was a monumental achievement, and having the college ID felt like a badge of honour. He finally completed his engineering degree from Chandigarh’s Punjab Engineering College (PEC).
Badshah’s work
Apart from music, he has also acted in a few films. In 2019, Badshah made his acting debut with the film Khandaani Shafakhana, portraying a music superstar who aids and supports the film's protagonist. Additionally, he has made several cameo appearances in other films like Jazbaa, Good Newwz and Ek Villain Returns. He made a comeback to television with the singing reality show, Indian Idol, season 15.
