Watch Out For These Liver Failure Red Flags

The Mayo Clinic defines acute liver failure as a rapid decline in liver function, typically occurring within a matter of days or weeks, in individuals who do not have a history of liver disease. This condition is most commonly triggered by a hepatitis virus or substances like acetaminophen. Acute liver failure is rarer than chronic liver failure, which progresses more gradually over time.

Also called fulminant hepatic failure, acute liver failure can lead to severe complications, such as bleeding and elevated brain pressure. It is a critical condition that demands immediate medical attention and often requires hospitalization.

Depending on the underlying cause, acute liver failure may sometimes be treatable and even reversible. However, in many cases, a liver transplant may be the only viable solution.

Common signs of acute liver failure include:

  • Jaundice, which is the yellowing of the skin and eyes.
  • Pain in the upper right side of the abdomen.
  • Abdominal swelling referred to as ascites.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • A general feeling of being unwell, or malaise.
  • Confusion or disorientation.
  • Excessive drowsiness.
  • Breathe with a sweet or musty smell.
  • Trembling or shaking.
