Tamil Nadu rain alert: IMD predicts heavy rains in Chennai and other districts, will schools close? Full forecast inside

Tamil Nadu's capital, Chennai, and other cities have been experiencing heavy rainfall over the past several days. The India Meteorological Department ( IMD) has forecast more rain for Thursday and Friday across the state. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, while Chennai is expected to see moderate rainfall through Thursday, some parts could still get heavier downpours.

Will schools close in Chennai today?
Despite recent heavy rains and ongoing weather warnings, schools in Chennai are expected to stay open. For now, there will be no holiday for schools and educational institutions in the city on Thursday, November 14.

Tamil Nadu Weather: IMD rainfall warning for Tamil Nadu districts
According to the latest RMC bulletin, heavy rain is likely at isolated places across 23 districts on Thursday. This includes Puducherry, Cuddalore, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and others such as Kallakuruchi, Tiruvannamalai, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Villupuram, Sivaganga, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and Karaikal.


The IMD has issued alerts for heavy rainfall not only in Tamil Nadu but also in Kerala, Mahe, Puducherry, Karaikal, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and southern Karnataka.

Chennai Rains: What’s causing the heavy rainfall?
A low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal is responsible for these rains, especially affecting Tamil Nadu's coastal districts and Chennai. This weather system is expected to move closer to the Tamil Nadu coast, bringing more rain to the central and southern parts of the state until around November 16.
