The question on every 007 fan's mind—who will be the next James Bond?—has remained unanswered for some time. However, Daniel Craig, who famously portrayed the iconic British spy for over a decade, has now teased that the person who will take over the role might already be in the room.

At the 15th annual Governors Awards held on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, Craig made a cryptic remark while introducing Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, who were being honored with the prestigious Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award.

"Let's just get something out of the way," Craig began as per People magazine. "If you came here this evening to find out who the next James Bond is, don't look at me, but he might be in the room. I'm just joking. Maybe I'm not," Craig added, leaving the audience guessing.

A New Chapter for James Bond

Craig's remark adds to the ongoing excitement surrounding the search for the next actor to don the iconic tuxedo and step into the world of espionage. After Craig’s final performance in No Time to Die in 2021, fans have eagerly speculated about who will follow in his footsteps.

Although Craig has been vocal about his lack of concern over who plays the next Bond, in a recent interview with Variety, he expressed indifference. "I don't care," he said when asked about the casting decision. Despite this, his playful hint at the Governors Awards suggests that the process is underway and that the producers may already have their candidate.

]The responsibility of casting the next James Bond lies with long-time producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, who have overseen the franchise for decades. Speaking ahead of the awards, Wilson shared with the Associated Press that casting a new Bond is a significant decision. "Every time we cast a new actor, the films change," Wilson said. "It’s the excitement of a new Bond, a new direction."

He continued, “Every one of these people who took on the role offered something new and different.”

The evening also saw actor Colman Domingo jokingly pitch himself as a potential Bond. "I know there's a list of phenomenal, handsome, athletic, suave, and debonair actors vying to be the next James Bond," Domingo quipped. "Now if you're thinking of me, I don't know what to tell you: Bond or Bond villain? You decide… I will leave my headshots on your table."

Though his comment was lighthearted, it speaks to the high level of interest from actors who hope to embody the legendary role of 007.

What’s Next for the Bond Franchise?

As for the future of the franchise, it is clear that Broccoli and Wilson are committed to ensuring that the next Bond brings something fresh to the table. With the casting process still in motion, speculation continues to swirl about potential actors, including names like Idris Elba, Tom Hardy, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. However, no official announcements have been made yet.

With Craig’s playful hint adding to the mystery, fans are left eagerly awaiting confirmation of who will take on the legendary role next. One thing is for certain: the next James Bond will face high expectations, and the casting decision will likely shape the franchise for years to come.

As for Craig, his time as 007 has helped redefine the character for modern audiences, leaving behind a legacy that will be felt in the franchise long after he has departed.
