New Delhi: The date was 3 May 2013... A woman who had served in the army suddenly disappeared from her home in a mysterious manner. She had no parents, so she lived in a rented house as a roommate with a 55-year-old man. When the police investigated, it was found that the woman had been murdered and her body was buried under a tree in a valley far from the house. After this, when the whole story of the murder was revealed, even the police officers were shocked.
This story begins on November 22, 1976, when this woman was born in Mexico. Her parents named her Maribel Ramos and her family moved to the US when she was a child. Ramos' dream was to join the army from the very beginning. After completing her education, she joined the US Army in August 2001.
However, just a month later, the 9/11 terror attacks occurred and Ramos was immediately sent to Iraq. After serving in combat zones twice, she was honorably discharged from the Army in 2008. After returning to California, Ramos lived with her mother and enrolled in university to pursue a degree in criminal justice.
Life was moving on when her mother passed away in 2009. In the midst of difficult circumstances, she rented an apartment for herself in Orange, California and started looking for a roommate to share the rent. One day she came to know about a 55-year-old man named Casey Joy, who was from Korea and was looking for a room for himself.
Joy's one-sided love for RamosRamos went to meet Casey Joy along with her sister Lucy and after talking to him, she decided to make him her roommate. Joy was a quiet person who did not socialize much with anyone and did not have any friends. In such a situation, Ramos found him to be a good person. However, gradually Joy started getting closer to Ramos.
Ramos saw him as a friend, but something else was going on inside Joey. Now he started attending every party and family function of Ramos. Joey's interference in his life also started increasing. It was the summer of 2012, when Joey invited Ramos' sister Lucy to meet him outside for some conversation.
Plastic surgery done to get RamosJoey told Lucy that he loves Ramos and wants to marry her. Lucy was shocked to hear his words. She explained to Joey that Ramos only considered her a friend and there was no scope for a love relationship between them. Joey did not say anything at that time, but her passion for Ramos increased even more.
To win Ramos' heart, Joy started adopting new tactics. She underwent plastic surgery worth more than $10,000 to look younger than her age. She got a tattoo of Ramos' choice. She even offered him to accompany her on a cruise. However, Ramos was completely clear from her side and always kept a distance.
Ramos is missing, she told her sister on phoneMeanwhile, on May 3, 2013, Joey called Ramos' sister Lucy. He was very worried on the phone. He told her that Ramos had not returned home since morning and he had also informed the emergency number 911 about this. Lucy told him that Ramos might have gone out somewhere with her friends and would return home sooner or later.
However, when Ramos did not return the next day, her sister became worried and filed a missing person complaint with the police. The police first checked the CCTV footage of her apartment complex. Ramos was last seen in the footage of May 2, a day before, when she was depositing her house rent.
Joy told two fake storiesThe police now started questioning all those who had seen Ramos last. During interrogation, his roommate Joy told the police that he and Ramos had a fight over the rent because he was unable to pay his share. Ramos was very angry about this and asked him to vacate the house. Joy told that she also got him threatened by one of her friends.
Joy said that he then went out and when he returned, Ramos was not there. However, during interrogation, the police saw fresh scratches on his arms. When the police asked him about it, he told a different story. Joy said that he was digging in the thorny bushes to plant saplings, when he got these scratches.
Clue found from a call made 12 days agoWhile the police were searching for clues about Ramos, an important thing came to light. Actually, Ramos had called the emergency number 911 just 12 days before her disappearance. She had said that she was feeling threatened by her roommate. While telling some strange things about Joy, she said that she wanted her to leave her room.
When the police came to know about this call, they suspected Joy and the officers started investigating his background. The investigation revealed that Joy is a violent person and his own sister had got a court order issued to keep him away from her. Now the police knew that Joy is a man who can do anything in a fit of anger.
The laptop told the whole storyIn such a situation, the police put a team of detectives behind Joey. After Ramos' disappearance, Joey's behavior changed rapidly. He started writing posts on social media and acted as if he was a very close friend. However, when Ramos' family members held a prayer for him, Joey did not go there. The detectives also found out that when the police searched his house, he would sit at a distance and keep an eye through binoculars.
The detectives were keeping an eye on his every move. They noticed that he often went to a nearby library and spent hours on a public laptop. When the detectives investigated, they found out that Joey used to search for updates on the police action related to Ramos' disappearance on this laptop every day. After this, the whole matter was revealed by looking at his search history. He had searched - 'How long does it take for a dead body to rot.'
Joey gets caught red handed by a mistakeHowever, he was caught red-handed when he used Google Maps to zoom in on a tree in a distant valley and then deleted his search history. The police immediately sent a team to the spot and found the remains of Ramos' body buried under the tree. Upon finding the body, the police arrested Joey on May 17, 2013.
However, on seeing the police, he tried to escape by jumping from the window, but he was caught. The police charged him with first degree murder, but due to weak evidence, the court held him guilty of second degree murder and sentenced him to 15 years imprisonment in July 2014. However, Joy kept saying that he is innocent and the truth will definitely come out one day.
