What is diabetic foot disease?
In a conversation with Amar Ujala, Dr. Aamir Qazi, an endocrinologist at a hospital in Pune, explains, the problem of diabetic neuropathy in which the nerves of the feet start getting damaged, due to which there is often pain, tingling, and numbness in the feet. If this is not taken care of in time, then the blood flow in the toes and other parts gets disrupted, due to which the cells start dying.
Seeing black spots on the feet is a sign of this, due to increased sugar, they start turning into ulcers. In this situation, it may even come to the point of cutting off the affected part. Its effect has been seen more in the feet.
What is the problem with diabetic foot?
The problem of diabetic foot ulcers is seen in about 20 percent of patients with diabetes. Due to reduced blood circulation in the feet, the cells there start dying, which can cause rotting and wounds. If the condition of rotting and wounds on the toes, soles, or upper surface of the feet do not improve, surgery has to be done on the affected part so that other parts can be saved. This type of problem is also considered life-threatening.
Some people start having discharge from their feet. This problem starts increasing rapidly and can also spread to the entire foot. Signs of the diabetic foot like black spots, blisters, abnormal swelling, burning, redness, blue marks, and strange smell in the feet should be taken seriously.
What do doctors say?
Health experts say that people who have diabetic neuropathy should take special care of their feet. Wash the feet with lukewarm water and soap and dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes. The skin of the feet should be properly moisturized. Do this two to three times a day. Apart from this, it is very important not to walk barefoot, wear shoes of the right size, and keep the feet away from any kind of injury. Keep getting your sugar checked from time to time.
