You must have heard many times that Tulsi should not be chewed and eaten. Information about this has been given in the Puranas. Many religious and scientific reasons have been given behind this. We are going to tell you about these.
Religious reasons
Relation with Lord Vishnu:
Tulsi is considered sacred in Hinduism and is considered the favorite of Lord Vishnu. Tulsi is considered to be the form of Lord Vishnu's wife Tulsi (Vrinda), so chewing it directly and eating it is considered an insult to his wife. Tulsi leaves should be consumed respectfully.
Rules in the scriptures:
According to the scriptures, Tulsi should be consumed with reverence and faith. When you pluck Tulsi leaves, you should chant the 'Shri' mantra. Instead of chewing it, you should swallow it with water.
Scientific reasons
Presence of mercury:
Tulsi leaves contain elements like mercury. If you chew them directly, it can damage your teeth. Mercury is a heavy metal, and chewing it directly can affect tooth enamel.
Leaf texture:
Tulsi leaves have a rough texture, which can cause throat irritation or discomfort if chewed directly. Drinking Tulsi by making juice of it or swallowing it with water is more beneficial for the throat and digestive system. This method ensures the absorption of its nutrients without any physical discomfort.
