Donald Trump has officially run as a multiple times but will he be able to run again in 2028?
The dust has not yet settled from the US election but some are looking to the future and asking if will be able to run again in 2028.
Trump has a long history of presidential bids, making his first run to be president over twenty years ago and reportedly considering it even earlier.
Trump reportedly considered a presidential run in 1988 as a Republican, but chose not to run. In 2000 he went for it, campaigning on the issues of fair trade, eliminating the national debt, and achieving universal healthcare.
He only qualified for two presidential primaries, but it was this campaign that saw Trump join forces with Roger Stone, who went on to become his longtime aide and strategist. Trump’s second presidential campaign was in 2016 and this time it was a success, securing him the title of 45th president of the United States.
Another run in 2020 saw him fail to win a second term as he lost the office to , former vice president under Barack Obama. And of course most recently Trump ran again in 2024, while at the time of writing votes are still being counted, this looks very much like another win for Donald Trump.
If he does succeed in becoming the 47th president of the United States that means that Trump will not be able to run in 2028 under the United States Constitution.
The 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951, prohibits one person from serving more than two terms as president. George Washington, the first U.S. president, stepped aside after serving two terms and that unofficial limit was respected by all presidents after Washington until the 1930s.
Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected president four times from 1932 to 1944. In 1947, two years after his death a proposal was put before the U.S. House of Representatives to legally limit presidents to two terms.
