Erik ten Hag reacts to prospect of being sacked if next two Man Utd games go badly

Send Push

Erik ten Hag has boldly stated that he is not nervous over his position at Manchester United, despite the pressure intensifying surrounding his job.

After a humbling 3-0 loss at Tottenham – which initially saw Bruno Fernandes sent off before being overturned on appeal – Ten Hag has come under intense scrutiny, with the Red Devils stuttering early in the campaign.

United's form is suffering with just two wins out of six in the Premier League. This includes one draw and defeats to Brighton, arch-rivals Liverpool and, most recently, Spurs.

Speaking to Sky Sports amid this rough patch, Ten Hag is remaining calm, insisting that his future isn't on his mind ahead of important upcoming clashes against Porto and Aston Villa which could ultimately determine his future. Reports have suggested damaging defeats in both games on Thursday and Sunday ahead of the October international break could spell the end for Ten Hag.

When asked about that potential situation, he said: "I'm not thinking about it. I'm not anxious as well, and we are in here together, we made [plans] in the summer, togetherness, the ownership, the leadership, this agreement, and we are all behind it.

"We knew, also, what the strategy was with young players in the transition period and we know then also in which process they can come, this can happen but they also know in the end when we are in May, all my last six seasons, there were trophies and that is why we are also now aiming for."

A less than inspiring 1-1 draw at home to FC Twente in the Europa League last week has somewhat dimmed hopes for a successful European journey, and the upcoming fixtures pose further challenges for Ten Hag's men.

United are facing a crucial week in Europe, with a challenging away game against Porto on Thursday in the Europa League. The Red Devils need to secure a win to appease their fans and climb from their current 20th position in the table. Failure to do so could see them drop out of the play-off round section and plummet to nearer the bottom.

In the Premier League, they face a tough test against Champions League outfit Aston Villa away from home. A loss could push them further down the league table towards the relegation places, especially as West Ham and Leicester City – who sit below the Red Devils – have seemingly easier fixtures against Ipswich Town and Bournemouth respectively.

If the teams below them manage to secure three points and United fail to do the same, they could potentially find themselves in 15th place - a position that really could put Ten Hag's job at risk.

Ten Hag has faced criticism before during his tenure at United, following poor performances both domestically and in Europe. However, some now believe that this would be the last straw for new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
