Saddam Hussain stopped in the road when he saw the two tonne horned beast in front of him. The huge rhino began to charge at him so he dumped his motorbike and ran down an embankment.

Locals screamed out and chased the rhino. But tragic Saddam was trampled on by the animal.

The rhino was seen running away as the 37-year-old was seen lying in a field, as reported by Need To Know. Forest Range Officer Nayan Jyoti Das said he succumbed to his injuries.

According to WWF, the one-horned rhino known as the "Indian rhino" is the largest of all rhino species. It was once widespread across the Indian subcontinent, but its numbers have plummeted due to poaching or being killed after being seen as agricultural pests.

The Indian rhino was once close to extinction at the start of the 20th century, with only 200 ones being left in the wild.

The WWF added: "The recovery of the greater one-horned rhino is among the greatest conservation success stories in Asia. Thanks to strict protection and management from Indian and Nepalese wildlife authorities, the greater one-horned rhino was brought back from the brink. Today populations have increased to around 4000 rhinos in northeastern India and the Terai grasslands of Nepal."

They are also known to kill several people each year in Nepal and India.
