A woman was “embarrassed” after an “unhinged” bridesmaid told her to leave the wedding she’d travelled overseas to attend after the lights were turned on during the evening reception.
are a joyous occasion but unfortunately, they’re not always without drama. There’s plenty of social etiquette rules surrounding such as always RSVP to confirm your attendance, bring a gift, and arrive on time but the most well known is to never wear white.
Knowing this, one woman opted for a yellow dress when she flew in from another country to attend her friend’s wedding. On popular , she described the colour as “bumble bee yellow”, and “like Belle in Beauty of the beast yellow”.
Elaborating, she said: “So yellow that I did not question if it was appropriate or not to wear and neither did my friends nor family. I arrive at the wedding, we have the ceremony, the cocktail hour, the dinner and the reception. I get many compliments on the dress and the bride even comments on how much she loves it several times.”
Much later, towards the end of the reception, the venue “dimmed the lights and turned on some blacklights”. These particular lights made her dress “appear more white than yellow”.

This didn’t sit well with one of the bridesmaids. The woman continued: “A member of the wedding party approached me while the blacklights were on and stated that I needed to leave because my dress was ‘white’ and ‘inappropriate’. I stated that the dress was yellow but the blacklights were making it appear white. The member of the wedding party stated that if I didn't leave she would ‘make me’.”
The woman refused to leave and stressed that she was there to celebrate the bride and groom. She also reiterated her dress was yellow and it was simply the blacklight making it appear a different shade.
The conversation was “heated” and “tense” and resulted in the bridesmaid approaching the groom and “angrily pointing in her direction”. The groom was nonplussed and simply “shrugged and continued to dance”.
The next morning, another friend approached the woman and told her she should have left because the drama over her “inappropriate” dress made many people “uncomfortable”. The woman sought opinions on as to whether she was in the wrong, but most believed the bridesmaid was the one behaving inappropriately.
One person said: “NTA. Who checks their attire under black lights to see if it ‘passes’? Ridiculousness. I understand if it appeared white under normal lights but c'mon, this was an unusual situation at the end of the reception. You are fine and whomever approached you was completely and utterly out of line. Some people have nothing better to do than look for problems that don't exist.”
Another said: “Sounds like she was a dangerous combination of unobservant, stupid and drunk. The friend who approached OP [original poster] the next day is just hooked on drama.”
Another commented: “If the bride didn’t have a problem, then no one needs to chime in with their opinion. The groom shrugged and moved on. This guest was anal.”
While another added: “The bridesmaid was unhinged. Now that the wedding is over, it’s worth mentioning it to the bride and groom.”
