PM Modi launches Param Rudra supercomputers: Check their features, locations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has virtually launched three Param Rudra Super Computing Systems and a High Performance Computing (HPC) system in India.

These supercomputers are designed for high-speed computation and simulation, facilitating research across various domains. These include weather forecasting, climate modeling, chemical discovery, materials science, and artificial intelligence.

The Param Rudra supercomputers are part of the government's initiative to make India self-reliant in supercomputing technology, as stated in an official press release.

Param Rudra supercomputers: A ₹130 crore project
Project details

The three Param Rudra supercomputers, costing approximately ₹130 crore, have been indigenously developed under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM).

They are strategically located in Delhi, Pune, and Kolkata.

The Ministry of Science & Technology has emphasized that the primary goal of this project is to enhance India's scientific research capabilities and empower researchers to address complex challenges and make groundbreaking discoveries.

Supercomputers to boost research in various fields
Research enhancement

In Pune, the Giant Metre Radio Telescope (GMRT) will utilize the supercomputer for investigating Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) and other astronomical phenomena.

The Inter University Accelerator Centre (IUAC) in Delhi will use it to advance research in areas such as material science and atomic physics.

Meanwhile, Kolkata's S N Bose Centre will employ this technology for advanced research in fields like physics, cosmology, and earth sciences.

During the launch event, Modi described it as a significant day for India in the realms of science, technology, and research.

He stated that "India is placing a strong emphasis on science and technology."

He also expressed his gratitude to all Indians for this achievement and dedicated it to the youth of India.

Alongside the Param Rudra supercomputers, Modi also unveiled a specialized High Performance Computing System dedicated to weather and climate research.

This system is expected to revolutionize India's meteorological forecasting capabilities, enabling more accurate predictions of weather patterns and climate trends.

The improved forecasting abilities will have significant implications for sectors like agriculture, disaster management, and urban planning.
