These $1,200 robotic shoes help you walk faster, naturally

Shift Robotics has introduced a new version of its innovative Moonwalkers shoes, also known as motorized roller skates.

The updated model, named Moonwalkers Aero, is designed to enhance the speed of the wearer's natural walking pace.

Unlike its predecessor which had 10 wheels, the Aero features six wheels — a change that makes them lighter and quieter, according to the company.

Moonwalkers Aero: A blend of speed and silence
Performance

The top speed of the Moonwalkers Aero remains unchanged at around 11km/h.

However, each shoe is significantly lighter—weighing in at 1.9kg as opposed to the previous model's 2.4kg. This weight reduction is attributed to a new "magnesium alloy powertrain."

Additionally, the Aero shoes are also 20dB quieter due to having fewer wheels and incorporating a new "Neodymium magnet-based motor."

Pricing and user experience
Cost

The sleekly designed Moonwalkers Aero are priced slightly higher than their predecessors at $1,199, while the original version continues to be available for $1,049.

Despite the price increase, Shift Robotics assures that "every visible part" on the Aero is user-replaceable.

The company has also made efforts to improve fit with shoes ranging from a women's six to a men's 12 by offering an optional spacer in two sizes.

Range and weight capacity
Specifications

The average range of the Moonwalkers Aero on a full charge is approximately 11km, although this can vary based on terrain, user size, and whether the user is moving uphill or downhill.

The shoes can support users up to 100kg.

Shift Robotics also claims that the new model performs more efficiently in hot climates with an extended range due to a new "thermal and regenerative management system."

Designed for smooth indoor surfaces
Usage

The original Moonwalkers are now marketed as a more robust version suitable for uneven terrains with bumps and cracks.

In contrast, the Aero is designed primarily for indoor use on smooth surfaces like warehouse concrete floors.

They also sync with a mobile app that offers preset modes for indoor, city, and sport use. This app allows users to customize their acceleration profiles according to their comfort level.
