Is there an attempt to 'overthrow' Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu? Is the country's court going to declare Netanyahu 'ineligible' for the post of Prime Minister? These questions are being raised because the leaders of Israel's war cabinet have issued a statement.
In this statement, the leaders of the coalition government have said that trying to disqualify the Prime Minister would be tantamount to a coup. According to political sources related to the matter, these leaders have issued this statement at the request of Prime Minister Netanyahu.
Conspiracy against Netanyahu in Israel? In fact, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has to record his testimony in the corruption case on December 2. It was being claimed that the government watchdog may demand that Netanyahu be declared 'unable' or 'unfit' to lead while testifying in court.
'This step will be considered an attempt at coup'
It is believed that due to the fear of this step, the leaders of the Israeli coalition government have issued a statement, which says, 'We completely reject any attempt to declare the Prime Minister unfit to serve, even if it is for a limited period. Any such declaration has no legal basis and is therefore invalid. Any such attempt will be considered a coup.'
Can the chair be lost in a corruption case? The trial against Prime Minister Netanyahu in three cases related to corruption and fraud has been going on since May 2020. While the prosecution has completed all its arguments in August this year, the Prime Minister's legal team is repeatedly postponing his testimony. Netanyahu is being criticized for this delay because he had signed an agreement in the year 2020 itself, under which he was allowed to remain in the post of Prime Minister while facing the trial.
But repeated delays by Netanyahu's team led to claims that a government watchdog group could appeal to the court to force Netanyahu to step down as prime minister.
