Party, speeding, broken sunroof: How a night out turned deadly for 6 friends

Dehradun. Here, the birthday celebration turned into a tragic accident when 7 young friends of Dehradun decided to go for a drive at night. While having fun under the influence of alcohol, they drove their car to a speed of 150 km/h in an attempt to race with a BMW. This high speed proved fatal for them, as their car collided with a big truck at a crossroads. The accident was so severe that the car was shattered and 6 friends died on the spot. Only one of these young men survived, who is now admitted in the hospital. 

Who all were in the car?

The accident took place on Monday night in Dehradun when a speeding multi-utility vehicle (MUV) collided with a container truck. The deceased include Dehradun residents Guneet Singh, Kamakshi Singhal, Navya Goyal, Rishabh Jain and Atul Agarwal along with Kunal Kukreja from Chamba in Himachal Pradesh. Only one person survived the accident, Siddhesh Agarwal, who is admitted in the hospital. His condition is stable but he is unable to give any information about the accident at the moment.

How did the accident happen?

According to the police, speeding was the reason behind this fatal accident. Inspector KC Bhatt of Cantt Police Station said that in the preliminary investigation, it was found that the truck driver was not at fault. The accident happened when the MUV hit the rear left side of the truck. This area is considered a blind spot for big vehicles.

Speed recorded in CCTV footage  

CCTV footage shows that the MUV was passing through the checkpoints at a normal speed before the accident. But near the ONGC intersection, its speed suddenly increased a lot. In the footage, it was seen that the MUV was passing through the checkpoints at a normal speed, but near the intersection, their car suddenly started running at a high speed, which proved dangerous for them. 

Severity of collision 

The impact of the collision was so severe that the roof of the MUV was completely blown off, killing two people instantly. The MUV was so badly damaged that it was unrecognizable. According to reports, the group was returning from a party hosted by Siddesh.

Testimony of restaurant owner 

A nearby restaurant owner said that at around 1 am he saw the MUV coming towards him from the wrong direction at a high speed. He hurriedly turned his vehicle to avoid a collision. He reported the incident to the police, but no action was taken.

A moment's wrong decision became fatal

Initial investigations suggest that the MUV driver misjudged the timing and tried to overtake, leading to the accident. Police believe he tried to overtake the truck before it could cross the intersection, leading to the fatal collision.
