A Chandigarh University professor and his two daughters died after their car caught fire on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway. His wife is severely burnt. The family was returning to Chandigarh from Sonipat.
Chandigarh: An associate professor of Chandigarh University and his two daughters died after their car caught fire. Sandeep Kumar (37) and his daughters Amanat and Prapti died. The accident took place near Shahabad on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway.
Sandeep was an associate professor of civil engineering at Chandigarh University. He was returning to Chandigarh from his native village Sonipat with his wife, children, mother, brother, brother's wife, and son. The trunk of the car driven by the professor first caught fire. After this, the entire vehicle was filled with smoke. The family got trapped inside as the car doors got locked. His brother and family coming in another car opened the door, but could not save them. The professor and his daughters died due to suffocation and burns. Sandeep's wife Lakshmi, who suffered severe burn injuries, has been admitted to the hospital.
The death of the professor and his daughters has plunged Chandigarh University and Sector 26's Sacred Heart School into mourning. A moment of silence was observed in the university. Colleagues said that Sandeep was a hardworking teacher and very popular among the children. Sandeep had been working at the university for more than nine years. He was active in academic and extracurricular activities. A holiday has been declared in the children's school, Sacred Heart School.
