Sitting for too long throughout the day can increase the risk of death from heart failure, heart attack and stroke. Even those who did 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise a week, this risk was present.
The habit of sitting or lying down for a long time can have a serious impact on your heart health. A recent study has found that sitting for 10.6 hours or more during the day can increase the risk of death from heart diseases, even if you are doing the recommended exercise daily.
Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital analysed data from fitness trackers of nearly 90,000 British people. These devices recorded their activities for seven days. The study found that on average, people sit for about 9.4 hours a day.
When the participants' heart health was analyzed after
about eight years, it was found that more than 10.6 hours of idle time was associated with an increased risk of death from heart failure, heart attack and stroke. Even those who did 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise a week, this risk was present.
What is the expert's opinion?
"Our findings suggest that reducing idle time is important for maintaining heart health," said Shaan Khurshid, co-author of the study. They suggested that 10.6 hours of idle time could be a significant limitation beyond which the risk of heart diseases increases.
In a commentary published alongside the
study, Dr. Charles Eaton of Brown University said that people usually exaggerate their exercise time and underestimate the time they sit. He advised that even 30 minutes of light activity (such as walking) can reduce the risk of heart diseases.
The study was published in the "Journal of the American College of Cardiology" and presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2024. That's the clear message for heart health: stay active and reduce idle time.
