Bihar Faces Imminent Flood Threat as Kosi and Ganga Water Levels Surge

Send Push

Patna: Due to the rapid rise in the water level of Kosi and Ganga rivers in Bihar, there is a threat of flood in many areas. The rising water level of the Ganga river has made the situation serious in 13 districts, while due to the huge rise in the water level of the Kosi river, North Bihar and Seemanchal areas are on the verge of submergence. In view of this serious flood crisis, the central government along with the state government has also become fully alert. According to the information, due to heavy rains in Nepal, 6,61,295 cusecs of water was released from the Kosi Barrage located in Birpur (Nepal) on Sunday morning, which is the highest since 1968.

In view of the seriousness of the situation, Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai has planned a review meeting with the NDRF today. The NDRF has been put on alert, and the state government has also instructed its officials to remain in alert mode and take necessary measures. Dangerous videos of floods in Bihar are surfacing on social media, in which water is seen flowing over bridges at many places. People living in the affected areas have been advised to move to safer places, and some areas are being evacuated.

According to reports, this is the first time in the last 50 years that so much water is being seen in the Kosi river, which can cause devastation in many districts of North Bihar. Locals say that they have not seen so much water in the Kosi river in the last 55 years. When the Kusha dam broke in 2008, about two to three lakh cusecs of water was released, causing the dam to break. This time, after continuous rains in Nepal, more than 5.5 lakh cusecs of water has been released from the Kosi barrage, making the situation even more serious. The Bihar government has issued a flood warning in the northern and central parts of the state after water was released from the Valmikinagar and Birpur barrages.

The flood crisis has deepened due to continuous rains in Nepal, in which at least 99 people have died so far. Many parts of Nepal are submerged, and disaster management officials have issued flash flood warnings. The impact of this devastation in Nepal is clearly visible in Bihar as well, increasing the risk of floods in many parts of the state.
