Congress on backfoot after defeat in Haryana, what is the plan ahead

Send Push

There was a wave of enthusiasm in the Congress party after winning 99 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, but the party's weak performance in the recent Haryana assembly elections and Jammu and Kashmir has put a brake on Congress's hopes. Along with this, the Congress's position to negotiate seats with its allies has also weakened. Political experts believe that after the defeat in Haryana, the Congress's position may now weaken in seat adjustments with allies in states like Maharashtra and Jharkhand, where assembly elections are due soon.

Haryana's defeat and challenge for Congress

Congress's defeat in Haryana has proved to be a big setback for the party's strategists. The party was fully expecting victory in this election and was confident that after the victory in Haryana, it would be in a strong position in the assembly elections of Maharashtra and Jharkhand. Congress's strategy was that after victory in Haryana, it would be in a better position in front of its allies and its claim in the seat sharing would be strong. But the unexpected defeat in Haryana has shattered the party's plan. Although the party has refused to accept this mandate, calling the election results of Haryana a 'conspiracy', the reality is that the defeat has weakened the political position of the Congress.

SP's pressure increased in Uttar Pradesh

The impact of the Haryana defeat is also visible in Uttar Pradesh. The Congress, which was in talks with the Samajwadi Party (SP) regarding seat sharing for the by-elections, is now in a weak position in front of the SP. The SP has announced its candidate for the Karhal seat without finalizing the alliance, which has made the situation more difficult for the Congress. If sources are to be believed, the SP is now considering giving only one seat to the Congress, and it may offer the Phulpur seat.

Shivsena (UBT) takes tough stand in Maharashtra

Shiv Sena (UBT), an ally of Congress in Maharashtra, has also started taking a tough stand. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi took a dig at the Haryana defeat and said that Congress becomes weak in a direct contest against BJP. Discussions are going on regarding the seat sharing between Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Maharashtra, and Shiv Sena (UBT) is demanding its bigger role. Along with this, there is an emphasis on announcing the chief ministerial face of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) first.

After the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress had hoped to emerge as the largest component of the MVA in Maharashtra, and now wants a bigger share in the seat sharing in the assembly elections as well. However, the Haryana defeat has weakened the party's position and now the Congress may also face difficulties in seat sharing with the JMM (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha) in Jharkhand and the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh.

Coalition in crisis

The Haryana defeat has also exposed the internal factionalism of the Congress. Differences among the leaders within the party are considered to be one of the main reasons for this defeat. This has also affected the political position of the party, and the party may face more challenges in coordinating with its allies in the upcoming elections.

Will Congress be able to make a comeback?

Congress has responded to the Haryana defeat by saying that the defeat in one election should not be linked to another election. The party's media chief Pawan Khera said that the Congress' performance in Haryana was good in the Lok Sabha elections, and it is not necessary that the result of every election is the same. He says that Congress can perform better in the upcoming elections and those who are thinking that the party has become weak will get an answer. The defeat in Haryana has seriously affected the political position of the Congress. It will also affect the party's strategy for the upcoming assembly elections in important states like Maharashtra and Jharkhand. Although the party is claiming that it will make a comeback in the upcoming elections, it remains to be seen how the Congress manages to share seats and make electoral strategy with its allies.
