Congress Takes Aim at RSS Chief Bhagwat Over Minorities in Bangladesh Remarks

New Delhi: The Congress party strongly criticized Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Saturday regarding his comments about the plight of minorities in Bangladesh. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused Bhagwat of supporting a political party that promotes disunity within India.

Kharge stated, "You (Bhagwat) are the one who supports the party (BJP) which wants disunity in the country. It starts with changing the Constitution, ending reservation, and then speaking different things about Muslims." He also responded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s claim that Congress has been overtaken by Urban Naxals, asserting that Modi has no authority to make such statements given the atrocities committed against marginalized communities under his government. "Wherever his government is in power, atrocities are committed on people of scheduled castes, especially tribals," Kharge remarked, urging the Prime Minister to address these pressing issues directly.

Congress leader Pawan Khera added that Bhagwat's remarks did not align with the RSS's traditional stance on minorities. "It is good if he understood the condition of minorities through Bangladesh and also what the minorities should do. But what is surprising is that if minorities in India say they should unite, they (RSS) see it as a threat," Khera noted, highlighting the contradictions in the RSS's approach. He questioned why Bhagwat advocates for global Hindu unity while viewing calls for unity among Indian minorities as a threat.

Earlier, during the annual Vijayadashami program in Nagpur, Mohan Bhagwat condemned the violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, stating that as long as radical violence persists, all minorities would remain at risk. He emphasized the importance of unity among Hindus, claiming that this was necessary for their protection. Bhagwat also expressed concern about a growing anti-India narrative in Bangladesh, suggesting that some factions there were considering aligning with Pakistan due to perceived threats from India. He warned that such sentiments could create instability and urged the Indian government to intervene.
