Do you really have to turn on the phone after boarding the plane?

Send Push

During air travel, we have all seen that as soon as we board the flight, we are asked to put the mobile in flight mode or turn it off. But have you ever wondered why this is done and what is its importance? If you also have these questions in your mind, then let's understand it in simple language.

Why is flight mode necessary?:  Nowadays we have all advanced a lot in terms of technology, but airplanes still use old radio systems. When you are in flight, the signals emanating from your mobile and other electronic devices can interfere with the airplane's communication system. This can affect the conversation between the pilot and the air traffic control, which can be dangerous for the safety of the airplane.

What will happen if you do not turn on the flight mode?:  If you do not turn on the flight mode and keep using electronic devices, it can have serious consequences. It has been seen many times that passengers do not follow these rules and they are deboarded from the flight. If someone uses the phone during the flight, the flight can be landed midway and the passenger can be deboarded. In some cases, passengers have even been handed over to the police.

What happens if you don't switch on flight mode?:  If you don't switch on flight mode, the radio waves and electromagnetic waves emitted from your device can disrupt the airplane's system. This can cause the pilot and the control tower to not receive signals properly, which can be extremely dangerous. This is the reason why it is strictly instructed to keep the mobile on flight mode or turn it off during air travel.

When was this rule made for the first time?:  In the 1990s, airline companies realized that the radio frequencies emitted from mobile phones can affect the communication system of airplanes. After this, the flight mode rule was implemented for the first time in America in 1996. After this, gradually many countries of the world adopted this rule, including India. Here DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) instructs passengers to keep their devices in flight mode.

Passenger safety comes first:  This rule has been made for the safety of passengers, so ignoring it is not right under any circumstances. Next time when you travel by flight, do not forget to put your mobile and other electronic devices on flight mode.
