This year, Sharad Purnima will be celebrated on October 16th. This festival marks the full moon night in the month of Sharad (autumn), and it is believed that on this night, the moon showers its divine nectar (amrit) on the earth. The moonlight on Sharad Purnima is said to have healing properties that can bless individuals with good health, wealth, and protection from obstacles. To harness these benefits, certain rituals and practices are recommended on this auspicious night.
1. Ensuring Good Health On the night of Sharad Purnima, prepare a special dish of kheer (rice pudding) using cow's milk and ghee (clarified butter). Once the kheer is ready, offer it to the deities during a formal worship ceremony dedicated to Lord Krishna. It is believed that worshiping Krishna on this night can bring peace and prosperity.
As the midnight hour approaches and the moon rises, perform prayers to Chandra Dev (the Moon God). Place the kheer under the moonlight to absorb its rays. In the early morning, consume the kheer, which is thought to enhance health and vitality.
2. Invoking Wealth and Prosperity Sharad Purnima is also a significant occasion for worshiping Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth. On this night, set up a space for worship and light a large ghee lamp (diya) in front of her image or idol. Offer yellow cowries (shells) to Goddess Lakshmi as a token of respect and devotion.
The following morning, collect the cowries that were offered and place them in your safe or wherever you keep your money. This ritual is believed to ensure that your financial resources remain abundant and your wealth does not diminish.
3. Eliminating Poverty To further enhance the blessings of wealth, light a ghee lamp in front of Goddess Lakshmi during the night. Adorn her with a garland of rose flowers and offer white sweets along with fragrant incense. This combination of offerings symbolizes purity and devotion.
After your prayers, recite the following mantra at least 11 times:
"ॐ ह्रीं श्रीं कमले कमलालये प्रसीद प्रसीद महालक्ष्मये नमः"
This mantra is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and is believed to attract prosperity and remove financial difficulties from one’s life.
Sharad Purnima is a time for spiritual renewal and material abundance. By performing these rituals with devotion and faith, you can invite health, wealth, and prosperity into your life. This full moon night not only brings blessings but also serves as a reminder of the importance of gratitude and mindfulness in our daily lives. Embrace the spirit of Sharad Purnima, and let the moon's divine energy enrich your life.
