Guwahati – Assam witnessed a groundbreaking moment as a Canadian seaplane made its maiden landing on the Brahmaputra River at Pandu Port. This demonstration flight marks a significant step forward for the state’s aviation and tourism sectors, showcasing the potential of maritime aircraft operations in the region.

The seaplane, operated by M/s de Havilland Canada in collaboration with the Ministry of Civil Aviation, took off from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati before completing its historic touchdown on the mighty Brahmaputra. The event followed a successful demonstration in Shillong, where the aircraft landed on Umiam Lake, highlighting key locations for water-based aviation initiatives.

Assam’s Tourism Minister, Jayanta Mallah Baruah, attended the event and even participated in the flight. Speaking about the achievement, he said, “Today is a historic moment for Assam as we witness the first-ever seaplane landing on the Brahmaputra. This successful landing from Borjhar Airport to Pandu Port is a milestone for India, and I congratulate everyone involved, particularly the teams from the Transport and Tourism Departments.”

The demonstration aimed to highlight the possibilities of integrating seaplane services with Assam’s abundant water bodies, which could significantly enhance connectivity and tourism. Minister Baruah shared his vision, stating, “Assam is blessed with numerous lakes and rivers. With seaplane connectivity, we can link key tourist destinations like Kaziranga, Majuli, and Umrangsu. We hope to make the seaplane project fully operational within a year, transforming the tourism sector.”

A large crowd, including families and children, gathered at Pandu Ghat to witness the historic event. Minister Baruah shared his excitement about the journey, describing the short flight as a unique experience. “Flying over the Brahmaputra offered an unparalleled view of our beautiful state. These services will not only boost tourism but also provide an efficient and scenic mode of transport,” he added.

Officials are optimistic that the successful implementation of seaplane services will enhance connectivity to remote areas, attract more tourists, and give a boost to Assam’s economy.
