New Delhi: Parts of southern and northeastern India are bracing for heavy rainfall on Sunday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert for several regions.
The IMD forecasts heavy rainfall in Assam, Meghalaya, coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, south interior Karnataka, and Rayalseema. Meanwhile, central Maharashtra is likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds. Thunderstorms and lightning are also anticipated in West Bengal and Sikkim, Bihar, Jharkhand, Konkan and Goa, Marathwada, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana, and interior Karnataka.
In northern India, thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls are expected in East Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh on Sunday and Monday. Skies in other regions are expected to remain clear for the remainder of the week.
On Monday, heavy rainfall is anticipated in isolated areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, coastal Karnataka, and south interior Karnataka. Northeast India and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are forecasted to receive fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall over the coming week, with significant rainfall expected in West Bengal and Sikkim over the next two days.
Additionally, isolated heavy rainfall is likely in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya over the next seven days, as well as in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on October 8 and 9.
In Meghalaya, heavy rain has already resulted in devastating flash floods, claiming the lives of at least 10 people, including seven members of a single family, in the South Garo Hills district within the past 24 hours. The continuous downpour has triggered landslides in the Gasuapara region of the district.
In response to the crisis, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma convened a review meeting to assess the situation across the five districts of Garo Hills.
