One in 8 girls face sexual harassment before this age

Sexual violence against girls is becoming a serious problem worldwide. A recent UNICEF report highlights the seriousness of this problem. According to this report, 1 in every 8 girls is a victim of sexual violence before the age of 18. Especially girls between the ages of 14 and 17 are more at risk.

Where is most sexual violence?

According to UNICEF, more than 37 million girls around the world have been victims of sexual violence before the age of 18. This figure is extremely worrying. The report also states that cases of sexual violence are most common in war-torn areas and developing countries. This problem is most serious in the areas adjacent to the Sahara desert in Africa. Around 7.9 crore girls have been victims of sexual violence here. This is followed by 7.3 crore girls in East and Southeast Asia, 6.8 crore girls in Europe and North America, and 4.5 crore girls in Latin America and the Caribbean. In North Africa and Western Asia, the figure is 2.9 million, while in Oceania, 6 million girls are affected.

Boys are not safe either

Sexual violence is not limited to girls. According to an estimate, 24 to 31 crore boys and men have also been victims of sexual violence in childhood. That is, 1 in every 11 boys face sexual violence.

Increased risk of problems

UNICEF has collected these data in 120 countries between 2010 and 2022. The report shows that weak institutions, political instability, and lack of security increase the risk to girls. It is clear that sexual violence is a global crisis, and strong measures are needed to combat it.
