The leaders honored the Father of the Nation, recognizing his contributions to India's freedom struggle and the enduring relevance of his ideals of truth, harmony, and equality.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Manohar Lal, and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also visited Rajghat to pay their respects. His life and ideals based on truth, harmony, and equality will always remain an inspiration for the countrymen," PM Modi said.

In addition to paying tribute to Gandhi, PM Modi honored former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary. Shastri, who was born on October 2, 1904, and served as India’s second Prime Minister from 1964 to 1966, played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s progress. Reflecting on Shastri's legacy, PM Modi shared, "Respectful tribute to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary, who dedicated his life for the 'jawan', 'kisan', and 'swabhiman' of the country."

Gandhi Jayanti is observed every year on October 2 to commemorate the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, whose leadership in the non-violent resistance movement helped India secure independence from British rule in 1947. The day is marked as a national holiday across India, with citizens and leaders paying tribute to his memory.

Lal Bahadur Shastri, born in Uttar Pradesh, was known for his simplicity, vision, and deep connection with the people. His tenure as Prime Minister was brief, but he left a lasting legacy, promoting the famous slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” to highlight the importance of farmers and soldiers to the nation’s progress. Shastri passed away in Tashkent on January 11, 1966, after signing the Tashkent Pact with Pakistan.
