Police in Gurugram reported the arrest of around 399 individuals and the seizure of liquor valued at Rs.95.43 lakh following the imposition of the model code of conduct for the upcoming assembly elections.

The model code of conduct is a set of guidelines issued by the Election Commission to regulate the behavior of political parties, candidates, and the ruling government during elections. It covers various aspects, including speeches, announcements, election manifestos, and general conduct.

Haryana's assembly elections are scheduled for October 5, with vote counting set for October 8. The announcement of the election schedule has triggered the enforcement of the model code of conduct, impacting governments, candidates, and political parties.

In a statement, police detailed that from September 16 to September 29, they seized 26,351.805 liters of liquor worth over ₹95.43 lakh. During this period, approximately 359 cases were registered following the enforcement of the poll code.

Elections often see an uptick in illegal activities such as liquor smuggling, cash transactions, and weapons distribution. To combat this, the Police Commissioner of Gurugram instructed the formation of special police teams tasked with taking action against individuals involved in illegal activities.

The Gurugram police chief has directed all Station House Officers (SHOs), crime branch teams, and various police units to monitor illegal trading activities closely. Additionally, teams in plain clothes have been deployed across different locations to ensure comprehensive surveillance of unlawful activities.
