Russia and China Strengthen Defence Cooperation in Key Talks

Russia and China have reinforced their defence and military cooperation following significant discussions, said the Russia's Defence Minister, during his visit to Beijing. The meeting between Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov and Zhang Youxia, Vice Chairman of China's Central Military Commission, emphasized the alignment of both nations on global issues and the steps needed in the current geopolitical climate.

Belousov highlighted that the talks were "substantive," with both sides seeking to deepen military ties and maintain high-level exchanges. China’s Defence Ministry echoed this, expressing a commitment to further expanding military cooperation.

This meeting occurred as China's military responded to tensions over Taiwan, warning against "separatist acts" following military drills, which were criticized by both Taiwan and the U.S. governments.

The Russia-China partnership has gained momentum since February 2022, when both countries declared a "no limits" partnership shortly before Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This invasion triggered Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II.

In a notable development in May, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping committed to advancing a "new era" of partnership, criticizing U.S. influence globally. They vowed to enhance their "strategic partnership," with Belousov hinting at significant decisions ahead.

Russia recently affirmed its alignment with China on several Asian issues, including opposing U.S. actions that could inflame tensions around Taiwan. While the U.S. accuses China of supporting Russia's war efforts in Ukraine through dual-use goods, China maintains that it has not provided weaponry to any side and defends normal trade relations with Russia.
