Russia Intensifies Attacks on Ukraine's Energy Grid as Winter Looms

Russia launched a massive aerial assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure on Sunday, deploying 120 missiles and 90 drones across the country. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the attacks, highlighting the significant damage to the country's already struggling energy grid.

This strike is one of the largest in the nearly three-year-long conflict, with officials reporting power outages and fears of a harsh winter ahead. The attack killed at least two people, injured over a dozen, and plunged parts of the nation into darkness.

Widespread Damage Ukraine's energy operator, DTEK, announced emergency power cuts in the Kyiv region and two eastern areas. Energy Minister German Galushchenko described the assault as a "massive attack on our energy system," targeting critical electricity generation and transmission facilities.

Explosions were reported in Kyiv and near Sloviansk in the Donetsk region. Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga called it "one of the largest air attacks" of the conflict, emphasizing the intensity of the strikes.

Zelensky also revealed that Russia's bombardment has destroyed half of Ukraine's energy production capacity. Despite these setbacks, Ukraine's air defenses successfully intercepted 140 of the launched missiles and drones.

Winter Challenges Ahead With winter fast approaching, Ukraine faces severe energy shortages. The country has been urging Western allies for assistance in rebuilding its energy infrastructure and supplying advanced aerial defense systems.

Concerns about continued Western support have grown following the recent U.S. presidential election. President-elect Donald Trump has questioned the United States' support for Ukraine and has proposed a swift resolution to end the war.
