Section 144 Imposed in Rawalpindi Ahead of SCO Summit

The Punjab government in Pakistan has enforced Section 144 in Rawalpindi until October 17 to maintain law and order ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. This measure prohibits various political activities, including assemblies, rallies, and demonstrations, during this period.

The SCO meetings are set to take place in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, with key goals focused on enhancing cooperation among member states in areas like trade, economy, and regional security. The SCO, established on June 15, 2001, in Shanghai, includes member countries such as India, Iran, China, Pakistan, and Russia, alongside several significant dialogue partners.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will represent India at the upcoming summit in Pakistan. As the country prepares for this important global event, additional security measures have been implemented to ensure its smooth conduct.

These measures include increased security at Adiala Jail, where former Prime Minister Imran Khan is incarcerated, restricting any visits from his supporters, lawyers, or family members. The decision to impose Section 144 was made at the request of district administration officials to safeguard people and properties and to prevent potential threats.

From October 5 to 17, the Pakistani Army has been deployed in Islamabad under Article 245 of the Constitution to uphold law and order during the summit. In addition, authorities have announced the temporary closure of marriage halls, restaurants, and cafes in Rawalpindi and Islamabad for five days.

Local police have issued warnings to traders and hotel owners about penalties for violating these restrictions. The SCO meeting, involving nine full members including China, India, Iran, and Russia, is scheduled for October 15 and 16.
