In response to a recent Hindu-Sikh protest, security measures were heightened around the Canada High Commission in New Delhi's Chanakyapuri area. The protest was organized following an attack on a Hindu temple in Brampton, Canada, sparking concerns over safety and religious tolerance.
During the protest, some Sikh demonstrators crossed barricades and raised slogans condemning violence against religious sites. The Hindu Sikh Global Forum, a coalition of Hindu and Sikh community representatives, led the march, calling for prompt action to prevent such attacks in the future.
Tarvinder Singh Marwah, President of the Hindu Sikh Global Forum, highlighted that incidents targeting Hindu and Sikh communities have been recurrent, urging authorities to address the issue seriously. The protest took place under the banner of the Hindu Sikh Global Forum, symbolizing unity across both communities.
"We have deployed additional forces, and barricades have been set up outside the High Commission," a senior police officer said. "Our teams are ensuring law and order is maintained."
The protest occurs amid ongoing tensions between India and Canada, with diplomatic relations strained following allegations from Canadian authorities regarding India's involvement in the death of Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. India has firmly denied the claims, calling them "absurd" and "motivated."
In a related development, Canadian authorities named India's High Commissioner in Canada, Sanjay Verma, and five other diplomats as persons of interest in the case, leading India to raise objections and recall the diplomats. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar criticized Canada for allowing individuals with ties to organized crime to settle within its borders, pointing out that such actions disregard warnings from New Delhi.
