South Korea has reported that North Korea is taking steps to demolish sections of inter-Korean roads that are no longer in use. This development comes amid escalating tensions between the two nations, particularly following North Korea's accusations that South Korea has flown drones over its territory.
Lee Sung Joon, spokesperson for South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in a briefing on Monday, "They have installed screens on the road and are working behind those screens, preparing to blow up the roads." He indicated that the demolitions could begin as early as Monday.
Lee also noted that South Korean military intelligence suggests North Korea might attempt to launch a space rocket. This act is viewed by the United Nations as a prohibited test of long-range missile technology. Furthermore, he warned that North Korea could carry out unspecified "small provocations" to increase pressure on Seoul.
The extent of the road destruction remains unclear, and it is uncertain how many sections will be affected. This situation follows North Korea's recent allegations that South Korea launched drones to drop propaganda leaflets over Pyongyang three times this month. In response, North Korea has threatened to retaliate with force if such actions continue.
On Sunday, North Korea's Defense Ministry announced that it had issued a preliminary operation order to its military units near the border with South Korea, instructing them to "get fully ready to open fire." The spokesperson warned that the entire territory of South Korea "might turn into piles of ashes" if a powerful attack were launched.
While South Korea has not confirmed whether it deployed drones, officials have stated they would respond strongly if the safety of their citizens is jeopardized. Additionally, South Korean officials noted that North Korea has been reinforcing its border security since earlier this year by adding anti-tank barriers, planting mines, and strengthening roads to prevent defections.
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are at a peak, with North Korea conducting a series of weapons tests and South Korea, along with the United States, expanding military exercises. The potential destruction of roads and other aggressive actions by North Korea could be an attempt to increase pressure on both South Korea and the US ahead of the upcoming US presidential election.
