SpiceJet is set to introduce seaplane services across India starting next year, connecting remote yet scenic destinations like Lakshadweep, Shillong, Guwahati, and Hyderabad. This move is intended to enhance tourism and make travel to hard-to-reach areas more accessible and efficient.
The airline already has rights to operate seaplanes on 20 designated routes. SpiceJet’s chairman and managing director, Ajay Singh, shared his enthusiasm, saying, "Seaplanes have the potential to transform India’s regional connectivity, opening up access to some of the most stunning, yet remote, parts of the country." He emphasized that SpiceJet is actively working with government and aviation authorities to make this service a reality.
The airline recently conducted seaplane trials in various locations, providing essential technical and logistical support. Avani, Ajay Singh’s daughter, who previously led SpiceHealth, is now leading the seaplane project for SpiceJet. She highlighted the company's commitment to expanding regional connectivity to bring affordable air travel to more people, regardless of their location.
On Saturday, SpiceJet demonstrated a seaplane flight from Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada to Srisailam Dam in Andhra Pradesh, with the event attended by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu.
Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu remarked that seaplane operations mark a new chapter for Andhra Pradesh, bringing transformative potential not only to the state but to India as a whole. He noted that while earlier attempts at seaplane operations had faced delays due to challenges such as the Covid pandemic, CM Naidu had long recognized the value of seaplanes for the region. He further mentioned that Prime Minister Modi had also promoted seaplane trials in Gujarat, indicating national support for water-based aviation projects.
