Ben Whittaker has been taken to hospital in Saudi Arabia after sustaining an injury during his light-heavyweight fight with Liam Cameron on Saturday.

The 27-year-old boxer was involved in a bizarre incident in the fifth round of his bout against Cameron in Saudi Arabia. Both fighters dramatically tumbled over the ropes and fell out of the ring, with Whittaker apparently coming off worse of the two men.

The young Brit, who has gained a reputation for his wild antics,

DAZN reported that Whittaker later left the Kingdom Arena stage area and was taken straight to the medical tent inside the building.

He was treated for injuries to his right leg before an ambulance arrived to transport him to a nearby hospital in Riyadh. Cameron, meanwhile, remained in his dressing room.

Whittaker was listed as the favourite to win heading into the bout, which took place in Saudi Arabia ahead of the highly-anticipated showdown between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol.

But the fight was stopped by referee Victor Loughlin in unusual fashion when both fighters exited the ring. Fortunately, Whittaker was able to get back up to his stool, but he was visibly struggling in the ring despite being given time to recover.

The match was ended as a split-decision technical draw, which appeared to be the most just outcome as the judges' scoring cards of 58-57, 57-58 and 58-58 were collected.

It was a bitter pill for Whittaker to swallow as the Olympic silver medallist saw his perfect record of eight straight victories - of which five were KOs - come to an end.

The talented Briton has been tipped for a bright future as one of the hottest young prospects in boxing after beating Eworitse Ezra Arenyeka and Leon Willings earlier this year in London.

But Cameron, speaking after the fight, felt his opponent did his best to get out of the fight and insisted he deserved to be awared the victory.

"He [Whittaker] didn't want no more. He were very tired. He give me his last 30 seconds. He had nothing left. Kid was knackered from round two," he told DAZN.

"But look, I definitely beat him. I don't get a fair share. I got a split decision lost in the last fight. I just had a draw this one. What more do I have to do? I've never had a promotional deal in my life, and I tried to do best today to get that win, and I thought I fully deserved it."
