Flau'jae Johnson has sparked speculation that the could sign her after she lavished praise on new head coach Stephanie White. Johnson has rapidly become a standout player for the LSU Tigers at college level, sparking excitement about her potential WNBA career.
As the 21-year-old is draft-eligible in 2025, there's talk of a possible partnership with 2024 Rookie of the Year at the Fever. Discussing their recent acquisition of White on an episode of her podcast, Johnson explained: "Let me tell y'all, the Fever, the Indiana Fever having Stephanie White as a head coach...
"I really like that, like I love that. I feel like she is a players' coach. Like I even remember when she was recruiting me at Vanderbilt, like I was like, 'I like this lady like, I want to go play for her'." White was at the helm of Vanderbilt when Johnson was transitioning from Sprayberry High School to collegiate basketball, but by the time she decided on Louisiana State, White had already left her position, reports .
Johnson also conceded that had White still been part of the Vandebilt team, she would have seriously considered joining the college to play under her. She explained: "I try to go where I like the people and she was a good, she seemed like a good coach."
Since beginning her journey in college basketball, Johnson has amassed an impressive array of honours including last year's NCAA Championship with LSU, the SEC's Freshman of the Year award, and the prestigious McDonald's All-American title in 2022.
During the 2023/24 season as a sophomore, Johnson boasted a free throw average of 76.9 per cent, alongside averages of 5.5 rebounds, 2.1 steals, two turnovers, one block and a commanding 14.9 points per game - all indicating a promising future ahead.
White said farewell to Vanderbilt in 2021 and after a two-year hiatus, she came back to take the reins at Connecticut Sun for the 2023/24 season. Under her leadership, the team secured a commendable second-place in the WNBA's Eastern Conference this season, boasting 28 wins to 12 losses.
Having played for the Fever from 2000 to 2004, White was unveiled as their head coach just as November dawned, taking over from Christie Sides. Although Sides guided the team to its first playoffs since 2016, her squad ultimately fell short against White's Sun side.
Upon her appointment, White said: "I am incredibly proud and honored to return home to Indiana and lead the Fever during such a pivotal moment in this franchise's history, as well as during such an important time throughout women's athletics.
"This franchise has and always will be committed to winning and I look forward to working every day to help deliver another WNBA title to the greatest basketball fans in the world."
If Johnson is selected by the Fever, she'll have the opportunity to join forces with 22-year-old phenom Clark, who dominated the WNBA in 2024 by shattering several all-time records in her debut season. Snatched up by Indiana as the first overall pick in the WNBA draft, Clark swiftly demonstrated her immense worth to the team.
She clinched 66 of the 67 votes cast for the WNBA's Rookie of the Year - a testament to her record-breaking achievements, which include scoring the most points and assists by any rookie in a single season as well as becoming the fastest player to reach 100 three-pointers in the women's game.
