Phillip Schofield left viewers 'cringing' after an unexpected confession in his documentary.

The former TV presenter hosted the third and final episode of his journey after spending 10 days on a remote island, where he reflected on his career downfall and his life up until the present day.

In his three-part docuseries titled Cast Away, Phillip opened up about his "unwise, but not illegal" affair that led to the derailment of his career.

The episode showed the disgraced star returning to civilisation, but before leaving, Phillip bid farewell to the crabs and fish, apologising for disturbing their peace.

However, fans were not impressed.

One viewer slammed the star as they fumed: "Is he taking the f***ing piss? He's out there apologising to the crabs and the fishes. But never an apology for the hurt he's caused. P****. #PhilipSchofield #Castaway." (sic)

A second person added: "The cringe keeps coming #CastAway."

A third viewer wrote: "#castaway I genuinely am beginning to have 2nd hand embarrassment!!!!!"

The 62-year-old presenter, once a household name on This Morning, attempted to revive his career following his Channel 5 documentary series.

However, despite the anticipation, only 1.4 million viewers tuned in to watch Phillip stranded on a desert island- a far cry from the large audiences he used to attract.

On the show, he reflected on his future in television, saying, "This is me having my say as I bow out, and the thing is, when you do a programme like this and you do it just for yourself, you have nothing to lose."

Adding: "They've taken pretty much everything from me, reputation, dignity, legacy, everything - anyway, I'm not bleating, I'm just getting it off my chest.

"The reason I am doing that is because I am loving this challenge, I am loving what I am finding out about myself, and loving every day.

"When I get on that boat and leave here I will know that I did my best and I've said my piece, and anyone who is bitter about that, honestly you can f**k off because I don't give a s**t - I quit!"

Phillip's bold statement sparked a wave of reactions on social media as the episode aired, with many viewers fiercely criticising the presenter for his remarks. One wrote: "He claims he no longer wants to be on TV, so why are you on TV Phillip?" while another commented: "'I don't want to be on telly anymore' says the man who will never be invited on telly anymore."
