Dan Walker opens up about horror bike crash ahead of 200 mile charity ride

has opened up about his 200-mile charity bike ride and the horror crash he experienced last year. The former BBC Breakfast presenter was rushed to hospital

The incident, which happened in February 2023, left him unconscious for 25 minutes and he said that he was "glad to be alive" after colliding with a car in Sheffield.

Speaking about his charity bike ride around the UK, he said that he "hasn't thought about" the horror crash and that he still "really enjoys" cycling.

He told the PA news agency: "To be honest with you, I've not even thought about it.

"I haven't watched the accident back. I know there's footage of it but I don't think I need to.

"I can't remember what happened, because I was out cold for a bit, but I never didn't think about getting back on a bike. I think I got back on and started cycling again maybe three weeks afterwards.

"Obviously, it goes through your mind every now and again. But I try and take as much care as I can. I think cycling makes me a better driver, and driving makes me a better cyclist, I would hope so.

"I think cycling is great. I really enjoy it, I'm not sure this is going to be for pleasure, but it's for a good reason and for a good cause."

After his crash, the Channel 5 presenter admitted that his "face was a mess" and thanked two paramedics for attending him, as well as a "lovely copper at the scene."

Smiling from his hospital bed, he concluded his worrying Twitter post by saying: "Thankful for our NHS."

Following his Strictly Come Dancing stint in 2021, he said taking up cycling was an "eco" decision and boasted that he could get around London quicker rather than if he was in a car.

Dan will cycle the width of the north of for 48 hours to raise funds for the charity, Global's Make Some Noise.
