Motorists in two major parts of the country have been urged to before getting behind the wheel in the coming days to .

With the predicting in the coming days for parts of Scotland and northern England, many Brits are thinking about wrapping up warm before they leave the house.

However, the footwear retailer has warned drivers that their winter shoes should not limit their ability to access the pedals correctly.

They explained: "With predicted, drivers need to be especially careful and not just because of the roads.

"Drivers should ensure their spare pair of shoes have soles no thicker than 10mm and have enough grip to not slip off the pedals."

Whilst the majority of drivers want to focus on keeping their feet warm on cold days, the footwear they choose must allow them to confidently and safely use the pedals in their car.

This means that the sole is no thicker than 10mm, allowing them to easily feel each pedal, whilst also being light enough that motorists can easily move their ankles to prevent harsh acceleration and braking.

Motorists wearing a pair of shoes that are considered to be unsuitable could be accused of 'driving without due care and attention' and be issued an on-the-spot fine of £100 and three points on their licence.

To help drivers avoid the penalty, shoezone recommended that motorists always carry a second pair of shoes in their vehicle that give them full control.

They advised: "We recommend drivers always have a spare pair of driving-appropriate shoes in their car, so the weather never catches them unaware.

"This means a pair of dry shoes should always be available to drive in during the late autumn and winter months."

Similarly, drivers thinking about taking to the roads when it is snowing should remember to pack a warm change of clothing in order to keep them comfortable in the event of an accident or breakdown.

Much like their footwear, the clothing items that drivers pick should give them plenty of control over the vehicle to avoid further accidents and fines.

Packing other items, such as a torch with spare batteries, jump leads to start the vehicle with a worn battery, and non-perishable snacks is also a good idea for cold weather travel.
