Gardeners World fans say 'it's a sad day' as BBC issue series update

Fans of the hit long-running programme took to to express their disappointment after the broadcaster shared a major update.

In a joint post with , the shared a sweet photo of the beloved presenter digging in his garden alongside his golden retriever Nigel.

Despite the heartwarming snap, the caption offered a devastating update about the gardening show.

It read: "The days may be getting shorter, but there's still plenty to do at Longmeadow.

"Join us for our last show of the series this Friday at 8pm on BBC Two."

With news of Gardeners World ending soon, @miamisburg.roots.and.shoots commented: "Oh it makes me so sad at the end of the season."

@picket.fence.gardens added: "I will be sad to see the Longmeadow season go."

A heartbroken @lyn_09333 shared: "So sad it's the last one! Where has this year gone."

As @drsaleix echoed: "I've been dreading this day. I know you need to rest and enjoy yourselves, but hurry back. Going to re- watch the whole series to get me through the winter months."

Last week, Monty Don opened up about and revealed which TV star he'd like to take over his role.

During an appearance on The One Show, the 69-year-old confessed that he plans to present Gardeners World for "at least another three years".

He made a similar point in and shared: "The serious point is I will be 70 in two years time ... I want to go on. I like making television programmes. I like writing .

"To have the energy to do that and not scrabble, always that sense of scrabbling I think I have to give something up and I'm not prepared to give up writing and I really enjoy the travel stuff I do.

"So therefore the logical thing to give up is Gardeners' World, which is, for all its virtues, a remorseless treadmill."
