It's always easier to prevent than to get rid of it, so taking steps now can ensure it doesn't become a problem.

Nic Shacklock, from , said: "Having a mould outbreak can be devastating to deal with, especially in your wardrobe where clothes may be ruined beyond repair.

"It's a common problem to deal with in the winter months as the colder temperatures mixed with the warmth indoors can result in excess moisture in the air.

"We recommend fitting vents into wardrobes to help distribute the airflow and to use items like rice and baking soda to absorb moisture in the air."

It's also advised to keep the home at a consistent temperature if possible to stop damp and mould building.

1. Fit vents

Having vents built into wardrobes can help distribute the airflow and reduce humidity.

According to Nic, it can help to improve air circulation and remove any excess moisture which can help fitted wardrobes directly on the back wall.

2. Regulate a room temperature

To prevent a mould outbreak anywhere in the room, it's recommended to keep it between 17C and 19C.

This is because mould easily grows in colder rooms which suffer from high humidity, which can easily spread throughout the home.

3. Open windows

Despite it being colder outside and warm inside, it's always important to let some fresh air into the home.

This can help to banish any unpleasant odours inside the bedroom, improve air quality as well as reduce condensation.

4. Spray white vinegar

The expert continued: "A mixture of white vinegar and distilled white water can help to get rid of mould which has already started to form.

"Take all of the clothes in the wardrobe, dab some of the solution onto a cloth and then lightly wipe the area in a circular motion for the best results."

5. Ensure all clothes are dry before putting them away

A common reason why mould builds in wardrobes and chests of drawers is due to clothes still being damp when put away.

Make sure to check all sleeves and collars on clothes to ensure there are no wet areas.
