Inside Prince William's romantic proposal to Kate 14 years ago

It has been 14 years since the world found out that Prince William was set to marry , then Kate Middleton.

While the Prince and Princess of Wales, both 42, show rare displays of affection in public - with - it seems the prince was able to pull out the stops when it came to romance for the special proposal in 2010, nine years after the couple first met.

Although the official announcement of the engagement took place three weeks after the proposal, this did not stop the couple opening up about the special night in their engagement interview in November 2010. During the interview, the princess said that there was a "romantic" inside of Prince William, and that the as they had been on holiday with friends.

This was despite the fact William had been secretly carrying the ring around in his rucksack weeks prior waiting for the right moment, which eventually came on October 20, 2010.

Although the proposal was a "shock" to Kate, the prince admitted that marriage had been something they had previously spoken about as a couple.

In the engagement interview, he said: "We'd been talking about marriage for a while, so it wasn't a massively big surprise, but I took her up somewhere nice in Kenya, and I proposed."
