New head coach has suggested he won't be overly concerned with formations as he begins his tenure at . Since taking over from earlier this month, there's been much speculation about whether he'll implement his signature 3-4-3 system, which brought him considerable success at Sporting.
Many United supporters are hoping he'll adhere to this approach in his bid to return the club to its past glory. Despite securing two trophies under Ten Hag, United often seemed to lack a distinct style of play.
Their traditional game, particularly last season, was reminiscent of a basketball match, with the action constantly shifting at breakneck speed. United became a spectacle for all the wrong reasons.
However, they occasionally managed to deliver a performance worthy of praise, such as their outstanding victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final - one of the highlights of the Ten Hag era. But such performances were sporadic, and inconsistency plagued the team.
This trend has continued into the current season, culminating in Ten Hag's inevitable sacking at the end of October. Earlier this month, ex-United captain Roy Keane criticised the club following United's 1-1 draw with Chelsea.
Keane expressed his disappointment with the team's current performance, stating on Sky Sports: "This is an average Manchester United team. All the stats back that up. They are hit and miss - you never know which team will turn up. Not good."
He also described their style of play as lacking conviction, adding: "'Boring' seems a bit strong but they lack conviction. It's really disappointing. It's so flat. This team is way off it, getting back in the top four."
Amorim is determined to instil an identity at Old Trafford, focusing on developing a distinct style of play. In his first interview as boss, he explained: "We know that we need time, but we have to win time. To win time is to win games.
"But the most important thing for me is identity. So since day one we will start with our identity. Of course, we are going to prepare the games, but we will focus a lot in our game model. How to play, how to press, these small things, small details."
Amorim's primary goal is to establish a recognizable style of play, which aligns with Keane's desire for a more consistent and convincing team performance.
Amorim is keen to form a unified approach among his players, with his primary objective being to get everyone on the same page.
If he can successfully achieve this and ensure the players are fully committed to his methods, an improvement in performance and results should naturally follow.
"I think it's important because a lot of people now talk about the 3-4-3 and the 4-3-3 and all that stuff," Amorim continued.
"But when I think as a player or as a teammate of Manchester United, it is not a system of formation, it's like the character of the players, the way they see the club."
"So we have to focus on that before the everything of how we play, how we press. The most important thing for me at this moment is to create the principles, the identity and the character that we had in the past."
