The new £120m 'game-changing' plane that could become a staple of British aviation

The could change British aviation by making more long-haul direct possible.

Its ability to fly up to 11 hours without stopping means UK travellers could soon have better access to destinations like Jeddah, and Delhi.

The £120 million A321XLR is already set to be used by from Gatwick Airport starting in March 2025, with daily flights to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.

The plane's extended range allows airlines to connect that were previously out of reach for smaller jets.

Spanish airline Iberia recently made history by becoming the first airline to operate the plane on November 14, 2024.

Speaking about the achievement, Marco Sansavini, the CEO and Chairman at Iberia, said: "We are very proud to be the launch airline for this new Airbus aircraft. The A321XLR will allow us to reach new destinations, operating transoceanic routes and doing so in a more efficient way.

"This aircraft is a game-changer because it will enable countless new non-stop destinations, opening a new chapter in air connectivity."

The A321XLR has around 200 seats and is more economical for airlines to fill compared to larger planes like the Boeing 777 or Airbus A350. Airlines also say it will allow them to offer new routes and extra flights during busy seasons.

For example, Iberia will use the plane to launch a year-round Madrid to Washington service and add extra flights on routes like Madrid to Boston.

The aircraft is also designed to improve the passenger experience.

Economy seats have ergonomic designs, USB charging ports, and larger entertainment screens, while business-class travellers will enjoy fully reclining beds.

Overhead bins have been enlarged to fit more luggage, and all passengers will have access to free Wi-Fi for messaging.

Christian Scherer, the CEO of Commercial Aircraft at Airbus, said: "Five years in the making, the A321XLR will enable countless new non-stop destinations; it truly opens a new chapter in air connectivity."
