The stunning Greek city that's still 23C in October and as pretty as Crete or Corfu

This stunning city known as the lakeside jewel of Northern still gets to 23C in October, making it the perfect destination to get away from the British autumn.

Kastoria, a city in northern Greece in the region of Western Macedonia, is situated high on the western shore of Lake Orestiada, in a valley surrounded by limestone mountains.

dating back to the Byzantine Empire - which lasted 1,100 years between 330 and 1453 - so the town is full of churches and other buildings from that era, as well as from the decades of the Ottoman Empire.

The best way to explore the city is via a tour around the lake - starting from the south and going north. Visitors can also stroll through the paths alongside the idyllic lake.

Beech and pine trees around the lake provide a bit of welcomed shade and have also created the perfect environment for bird watching.

The route also , with seven underground lakes and rooms with imposing stalactites, before ending up Agios Athanasios viewpoint to admire the stunning city.

Kastoria is also home to the largest freshwater aquarium in the Balkans, full of lake and river fish - some living there in shelters as they face extinction.

The city was once a hub of the fur and leather trades and though this has almost completely stopped, Kastoria still hosts the world's largest fur exhibition once a year.

The south bank of the Orestiada , with places to eat and drink open all day and into the night.

The ancient neighbourhood of Doltso is just a stone's throw from the lake and features buildings dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries.

Many of these historic structures into museums, including the Neratzi Aivazi mansion, now home to the Folk Art Museum, and the Emmanouil mansion, which houses the Costume Museum.

For this week, the has forecasted that Kastoria will see highs of 23C degrees on Tuesday, and lows of 14C on Sunday. In October, the average temperature in the city is 19C - five degrees warmer than that of England.
