Thomas Tuchel must believe he can end 58 years of hurt as manager of - otherwise he would not be answering the FA's calls. The German is now the favourite to become only .
The former boss, who has won the , Bundesliga, and Ligue 1, is said to be in advanced discussions to replace . Despite never having managed at international level, Tuchel had previously set a clear stipulation for any potential role with a national team.
He made it clear that he would only consider such a move if he felt there was a genuine opportunity to lift silverware. Now he is in advanced talks with the FA, it appears he senses an opportunity to enshrine himself in English folklore.
In an interview with , shortly after he was dismissed by Chelsea, Tuchel was asked about the prospect of managing an international team. He said: "Yeah, why not? I would, I would.
"I did not give too much thought to it until now. But I would consider if it is the right team and if it has the potential to win trophies like the World Cup and the Euros."
When probed about the possibility of managing England, while Southgate was gearing up for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Tuchel acknowledged England's strengths but chose to keep his cards close to his chest. He added: "I see where you are going. But I think England has a good coach right now.
"The team is very strong and very talented... as for everything else, I will not comment."
With Tuchel seemingly poised to attempt to end over half a century of English footballing disappointment, it appears he sees the current squad as capable of lifting silverware under his guidance. If he strikes a deal with The FA, he would become the third foreign manager to take charge of the national side since Sven Goran-Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
Since leaving Bayern Munich at the close of the previous season, Tuchel has been without a club, despite persistent rumours linking him to Manchester United, where Erik ten Hag is facing challenges. However, it's believed that discussions between Tuchel and The FA have recently picked up pace, indicating imminent negotiations. The FA have also reportedly engaged with several potential candidates and even made overtures to Manchester City's Pep Guardiola, who is nearing the end of his contract.
Interim manager Lee Carsley has publicly acknowledged The FA's pursuit of a "world class manager" to lead an England squad that has reached back-to-back European Championship finals. However, Carsley is expected to remain in interim charge for the upcoming Nations League fixtures.
