A Las Vegas man, Vem Miller, 49, was arrested Saturday outside former President Donald Trump’s rally in Coachella, California. Miller was found in possession of many guns, ammo boxes, and passports bearing various identities, as stated by Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco. Miller was arrested at a checkpoint going to the event at around five o'clock in the evening.

Unauthorized Access and Fake License PlateMiller tried to infiltrate the gathering by claiming to be a member of the press, but he was unsuccessful. Investigators launched an inquiry after discovering discrepancies in his testimony. Miller's car featured a customized license plate, which Bianco pointed out is frequently a sign of membership with "sovereign citizens." In general, this group disapproves of laws and government power. Possession of Weapons and Disarrayed VehicleDeputies discovered two guns, many ammo boxes, and several forms of identity bearing distinct names inside Miller's car. Bianco characterized the car as being "in disarray." Miller was arrested for having a loaded gun and a large capacity magazine in his hands. After that, he was discharged and given a January 2, 2025, court date. Sovereign Citizen Group TiesRegarding Miller's apparent connection to the "sovereign citizens" movement, Bianco went into further detail. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, this group is far-right and thinks they are above the law in the United States. Bianco stressed that those who refuse to register their cars or get driver's licenses are typically part of this movement. Miller's vehicle was unregistered, so deputies had to use the vehicle identification number to confirm its legitimacy. Heightened Security at Trump RalliesAfter two recent assassination attempts, security at Trump rallies has increased. A guy was charged with attempted assassination last month after he reportedly followed Trump around for 12 hours with the intention of killing him. Trump was hurt in a previous attempt while attending a rally in Pennsylvania. Law enforcement organizations, such as the FBI and Secret Service, have certified that Miller did not immediately represent a threat to Trump or rally attendees in spite of these instances. The public was reassured by a joint statement from the FBI, Secret Service, and U.S. Attorney's Office that no safety breaches had occurred and that protection measures were still in place. In order to further their investigation into Miller's intentions and actions, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department is working with federal authorities.
