Bengaluru Engineer Lands Lucrative Job In Sweden With 3x Salary Hike, But He Isn't Sure Because ...

A Bengaluru-based engineer recently ignited an online discussion after sharing his dilemma over a lucrative job offer in Sweden. The 31-year-old professional, currently earning Rs 1.3 lakh per month, revealed that after accounting for rent, support to his parents, and other living expenses, he is left with Rs 50,000 to 60,000—most of which goes toward repaying his home loan. With just a year left on the loan, the engineer is satisfied with his current role but is now considering a job offer in Helsingborg, Sweden, where he would earn 50,000 SEK (around Rs 4 lakh) per month. In a Reddit post, the man explained his situation, noting that while his current job in Bengaluru provides good work-life balance, health insurance for his family, and promising prospects, the Swedish offer has him reevaluating his financial goals. His desire to achieve financial independence and invest is driving his interest in the move, although his commitments to his dependent parents and a wife who is hesitant to work complicate the decision.“I don’t see myself permanently settling abroad,” he wrote, adding that his primary motivation for the potential move is to break free from his debt cycle and invest for the future. Although he's visited Sweden on short business trips, he admitted that his knowledge of the country’s financial landscape is limited.

The post prompted mixed reactions. One user pointed out that Sweden’s taxes are steep, with income above $50,000 being taxed at nearly 50%. Another commented that while the experience abroad could be worthwhile, the engineer’s wife might struggle with loneliness unless she finds ways to engage, such as through volunteering or language classes. Some users emphasised that Sweden is more suited for those seeking a better quality of life rather than quick financial gains. “Sweden is not a country where you go to earn high... you can save more if you live frugally, but what’s the point?” one person remarked. Another user echoed this sentiment, suggesting that moving to Sweden only makes sense if the engineer plans to settle there long-term.However, others encouraged the engineer to take the leap, with one advising him to negotiate a higher salary of around 60,000 SEK. The user broke down the potential costs, estimating rent and maintenance at 13,000 to 15,000 SEK and groceries at 5,000 SEK. Healthcare, which is largely free in Sweden, and access to free education for children were also highlighted as potential benefits. Additionally, Sweden’s strong work-life balance, including generous sick leave and vacation policies, was noted as an advantage.
