India spinner Varun Chakravarthy was all set to celebrate his son Aathman's second birthday on a high after he picked up five wickets in a tense chase and had almost taken India to a win while defending a low total. He first dismissed South Africa skipper Aiden Markram, followed by Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, the dangerous Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller. In what looked like an easy chase, South Africa were reduced to 66/6 in the 13th over and India could smell a 2-0 series lead. By the 16th over, they were 88/7 after 16 overs and the hosts looked doomed to another loss. That was before Gerald Coetzee and Tristan Stubbs took the responsibility themselves to try and get closer to the target. They scored 12 runs off the 17th over bowled by Arshdeep Singh and 12 more off the 18th over delivered by Avesh Khan. The equation was soon down to 13 runs off 12 balls and Stubbs smacked four boundaries off Arshdeep as India's 19th over demons came back to haunt them again. Chasing the modest total, South Africa were down 86/7 before Stubbs and Coetzee added 42 runs for the eighth wicket to take them home."Fortunately the run rate never got away from us. I had 30 (runs) in mind to get off the last three and the dew came in to help us also," Stubbs said at the post-match presentation. "Coetzee came in and played that innings in the end and we got over the line. He (Coetzee) walked in and said we can win this. It was always two hits away from being back to run-a-ball," Stubbs added. The 24-year-old then said that it was his mother's birthday and a large number of people, mostly family, had come to watch him play."I just tried to breathe. It's my mom's birthday so there were 20-30 people who came to watch the game. This is my favourite place to play cricket. I was nervous, so I was trying to control my breathing," Stubbs said. But the day couldn't be special for Chakravarthy, despite picking up a brilliant five-for. The onslaught after his spell meant South Africa bagged the match by three wickets and his son's birthday didn't end up as he would have planned. "It's my son's birthday today, so he's turning two and yeah, it would have been nice if we had won the match," Chakravarthy said while speaking on JioCinema after the match. India play South Africa in the third T20I on November 13 in Centurion.
