It is that time of the year again. Kolkata is gearing up to welcome the 10-armed Goddess Durga with her family as they make their way for five days of love, pampering and worship at Her baaper bari (paternal home). With days left for Durga Puja 2024 (October 9-13), Kolkata is buzzing with excitement as clubs start inaugurating their marquees or pandals – each showcasing some stunning thoughts and themes. Here are ten must-visit pandals that will surely turn heads.

Santosh Mitra Square: The Sphere of Las VegasOne of the oldest pujas in North Kolkata, Santosh Mita Square, lovingly called Lebutala Park by locals is bringing a slice of Vegas to Kolkata with a stunning replica of the Sphere of Las Vegas. Pandal-hoppers can expect to see a hemisphere-shaped pandal with an 11-D show showcasing the ten-armed Goddess and Mother Nature, making it a spectacle of modern technology.

Kumartuli Sarbojonin Durgotsav: Farmers’ ProtestKumartuli Sarbojonin, in its 90th year, addresses social issues with the theme "Khudha" (hunger), highlighting the ongoing farmers’ protests. Expect motifs of farming tools and a unique idol that reflects their poignant message. College Square: Switzerland Parliament HouseThis 77-year-old puja is famous for its breathtaking play of incandescence every year. This year, they’ll replicate the Switzerland Parliament House, complete with a laser show and an impressive structure that promises to leave visitors in awe. The idol for College Square is made by Padmashri Sculptor Sanatan Rudra Pal.

Sreebhumi Sporting Club: Shri Venkateswara Temple of TirupatiLocated in Lake Town, Sreebhumi Sporting Club has grown into a perennial favourite over the last few years. This year, they’re replicating the revered Shri Venkateswara Swamy temple in Tirupati, featuring a grand 100-foot facade. With a pure white exterior and golden interiors, this homage to spirituality is a must-see. The idol has been made by Pardip Rudra Pal and bears a striking resemblance to the posture of Shri Venkateswara Swamy. Dum Dum Park Tarun Sangha: Natural Disasters and River FlowWith the theme "Muktodhara" (free flow), this 39th-year puja emphasises the impact of human intervention on nature. Expect a striking display featuring a mountain goddess and messages about environmental stewardship.

Telengabagan: Food WastageFocusing on social issues, Telengabagan will spotlight food wastage. This year’s theme features Goddess Durga as Annapurna, embodying the spirit of nurturing and addressing the disparity between the rich and the poor. Ekdalia Evergreen Club: Puri Jagannath TempleEkdalia is set to replicate the iconic Puri Jagannath temple, complete with daily flag changes and the beloved prasad from Puri. This vibrant celebration brings a taste of the coastal town to Kolkata.

Kabiraj Bagan Sarbojonin Durgotsav: Underwater MetroCelebrating India’s first underwater metro, Kabiraj Bagan will create a unique experience with a replica of the Howrah Bridge, allowing visitors to walk across and enter a "Metro" before reaching the main puja area. Chetla Agrani: Ganga PollutionHighlighting the urgent issue of Ganga pollution, Chetla Agrani will use eco-friendly materials in their pandal to inspire reverence for the holy river, reminding visitors of the need to preserve its sanctity. Garia Pancha Durga: Vrindavan Chandrodaya TempleCelebrating its 70th year, this puja will replicate the Chandrodaya temple of Vrindavan. Expect an 80-foot pandal adorned with glass and dry fruits, accompanied by stunning illumination. Also Read: Apart from these stunning thematic representations, pandal hoppers must visit Baghbazar Sarbojanin and Shimla Byam Samiti in the North, both of which are heritage celebations. While Baghbazar is known for its towering ekchala idol, Shimla Byam Samiti was the first community Durga Puja which broke free from the ekchala mould to create separate idols. Down South (Kolkata), if one is into good food, music and endless conversations, Maddox Square is the ultimate favourite spot for everyone.
